Wolfsburg Castle

In addition to lending the city its name, the impressive Weser Renaissance building is a cultural hub. It houses the Städtische Galerie art gallery, the Kunstverein art association and the Stadtmuseum city museum.

The castle was initially constructed as an aristocratic estate at the beginning of the 14th century. Its current design dates back to the late 16th century and it is a spectacular example of Weser Renaissance architecture.

It was founded by the powerful noble family of von Bartensleben. In the mid-18th century, there were no more male heirs in the von Bartensleben bloodline, so the castle was inherited by the counts of Schulenburg, who owned it until 1942. It then changed hands several times, until the city of Wolfsburg came to own it in 1962. Since then, the castle has been constantly renovated and used for representative and cultural purposes.

The Städtische Galerie art gallery opened in Wolfsburg Castle in 1974. It hosts exhibitions and installations of contemporary art on several floors. But the cultural offerings do not stop there, as the castle is also home to constantly changing exhibitions by the Kunstverein Wolfsburg, the Stadtmuseum city museum in the castle’s coach houses, a printing workshop, artists’ studios and concerts in the Antoniensaal hall or in the castle courtyard.

The Schlossremise café and restaurant, based in the former ‘garage’ for the noblemen’s carriages, caters for all culinary needs.

Visit Wolfsburg Castle and immerse yourself in an eventful period of history. Tourists can learn all sorts of interesting facts about the past, including stories of knights, noblemen and ghosts, on guided tours.
