Hildesheim Cathedral, known as the Mariendom, one of the oldest episcopal churches in Germany, is a three-aisled basilica made of cut stone and quarry stone. The cloister adjoins the main apse, a two-storey westwork, within the courtyard of which grows the emblem of Hildesheim, the Thousand-year Rose. The church’s medieval treasures include two monumental bronze castings, the Christ Column and the Bernward Doors. These two masterpieces were cast as a single piece – a pioneering achievement and technical innovation for its time.
Hildesheim Cathedral Museum is also home to one of the world's most important collections of religious art: the Hildesheim Cathedral Treasury, which also forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
