Worpswede - The Museums

Barkenhoff

The life’s work of Heinrich Vogeler in an authentic place: the Barkenhoff is an extraordinary experience. The works of the painter, graphic artist, designer and architect Heinrich Vogeler (1872–1942) are displayed in a multi-faceted exhibition in the house that served as the residence and studio of the co-founder of the Worpswede artists’ colony.

The permanent exhibition features objects from the museum’s own collection in combination with works on loan from other museums and private collectors. The museum’s offerings are rounded off with special exhibitions that pave the way to understanding the artwork of Vogeler and the artistic and cultural history of Worpswede. The exhibition in the Heinrich Vogeler Museum takes visitors back in time to show the artistic development of Heinrich Vogeler, while also showcasing his works as a witness to the great upheavals throughout the 20th century until World War II. The museum, which was renovated in 2004 and redesigned, received further exhibition space and a spacious new foyer in the course of the master plan Worpswede in the former Remisen.

Große Kunstschau

The Große Kunstschau houses the most famous paintings of Worpswede’s first generation of painters and is the centrepiece of Bernhard Hoetger’s outstanding architectural ensemble. This unique architectural masterpiece of northern German Expressionism is complemented by the newly renovated and most modern museum building in Worpswede. Originally developed from the former Roselius Museum, it provides exhibition space for current and contemporary art.

Haus im Schluh

For more than 90 years, visitors to the artists’ village of Worpswede have been charmed by a very special gem in the shade of towering old trees. If you walk out of the centre of the village and turn into the sandy lane called "Im Schluh", you will feel like you have left all of the hustle and bustle of everyday life behind. Up ahead, in a once humid hollow, two romantic old timber-framed farmhouses with deep and heavy thatched roofs form a picturesque ensemble: Haus im Schluh.

This atmospheric site was founded in 1920 by Martha Vogeler, Heinrich Vogeler’s first wife. After separating from her husband, it was here that she took the paintings, the old furniture and the beautiful furnishings from the Barkenhoff.
The Heinrich Vogeler Collection, comprising paintings, etchings and furniture, constitutes the main part of the museum, even today. Supplemented by valuable, often peculiar and interesting objects from farmsteads as well as traditional handicrafts that Martha and Heinrich collected, the overall atmosphere is truly special.

Worpsweder Kunsthalle

The Worpsweder Kunsthalle is one of the most traditional museums in Worpswede. The master bookbinder Friedrich Netzel began offering his workshop as an exhibition space for young artists when the artists’ colony of Worpswede was still in its early years. His son Friedrich had a new building constructed on the museum’s present site at Bergstrasse 17 that he set up as a gallery and art dealer’s office.

In addition to selling the pictures, the Netzel family started to curate a collection of works by the founding generation very early on. In keeping with this tradition, paintings by artists from the second and third generations were also collected. As a result, the Worpsweder Kunsthalle now owns an impressive collection that aims to provide an overview of the art history of the place. This collection can be displayed in temporary exhibitions. Since 1999, a dedicated team of experienced staff and volunteers have continued to manage the collection and museum as the Worpsweder Kunststiftung Friedrich Netzel (Worpswede Art Foundation Friedrich Netzel).
