Lingen is a large independent town in the west of Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony). With around 57,000 residents, it is the largest town in the district of Emsland,
and has become the region’s economic and cultural hub. The town’s history dates back more than a thousand years to 975, when “Liinga” received its first official mention. The town's long history is reflected in the many historic buildings in its centre.
In addition to its history, Lingen has plenty of cultural offerings, including the Welt-Kindertheater-Fest (World Festival of Children's Theatre) and the Kivelingsfest folk festival. In the town centre, there are plenty of great options for shopping in the Old Town’s picturesque alleyways and the modern Lookentor shopping centre.
Lingen is situated on the Ems river. This location makes it a perfect leisure and recreational area for hikers, cyclists, horse riders and water sports enthusiasts.
